Lawn care tips for New Jersey

Keep a good mowing schedule

You’ll need to mow weekly from spring through early fall when grass is growing fastest. Aim for mid-morning or late afternoon, and don’t mow when the grass is wet.

Adjust mowing height

Each grass has a preferred height. Know what it is to help your grass thrive, but adjust slightly according to weather conditions. For instance, leave the grass a bit longer in the high heat of summer to keep it from wilting.

Aeration

Soil becomes compacted and hard over time. Aeration is the process of puncturing tiny holes in the soil to allow water, air, and nutrients to be absorbed more easily. We recommend doing this once a year.

Fertilization

Lawns need nutrients just like we do to flourish, so be sure you’re giving yours what it needs. We recommend getting a soil test to determine what it’s lacking, then choosing a fertilizer that provides what’s missing. The best times to fertilize are early spring and late summer.

Watering

Watering in the middle of the day when it’s hot is a no-no because the sun evaporates much of the water before it reaches the roots.
